Rothenthurm moorland
The largest raised bog in Switzerland stretches between Rothenthurm and Biberbrugg: a vast plain that offers recreation for people and animals. You can hike, bike or ride in the natural moorland landscape. In winter, a cross-country ski trail runs alongside winter hiking trails right across the moor.
Moor with history
The Rothenthurm high moor became famous throughout the country in 1987 when the local population successfully fought against a weapons range in this area. Since then, the moor has been protected - and nature can unfold in all its beauty. Birds build their nests here, frogs spawn and wild orchids grow out of the ground without human intervention. Lush meadows alternate with mystical forests, grasses and moss, making the high valley glow in earthy and rusty colors.
Turpnä hut
Peat used to be cut in the Rothenthurm high moor. This is called "Turpnä" in the local dialect. The distinctive peat cutting edges and Turpnä huts still bear witness to this once flourishing industry. The Rothenthurm raised bog was the first bog in Switzerland to be placed under protection following a referendum in 1987.
Enchanted by nature
As the seasons change, the trough-shaped high valley plays with colors. In spring, it is adorned with a purple veil of primroses. Lemon, sail and mother-of-pearl butterflies flutter their colorful summer dresses. On cool fall mornings, it wears a diadem of dewdrops. And in winter, the sun's rays often caress the white blanket while the fog hangs over the lowlands. Mountain pines, spruces, copses, meadows and the meandering beaver add to the charm of the landscape.

There are parking spaces available in Rothenthurm, and good train and bus connections also make it possible to travel by public transport. From the village, you can quickly reach the unspoiled nature of the high moor, where you can also stop for refreshments.
